To look down on this present lot is to be reminded of a time when the whole world looked up. On July 21, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped off the Eagle to become the first human to stand on another world. Roughly 15 minutes after Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin - an Omega ambassador since 2009 - joined him on the Moon's Surface. It was during this legendary mission that the Omega Speedmaster Professional become the first watch worn on the moon.
This lot not only commemorates a great moment in history, but also celebrates a design first: the use of a brand new patent-pending exclusive alloy called 18K Moonshine Gold.
The watch has two Apollo 11 tributes found on the dial. A number “11” featured in 18K Moonshine™ Gold at 11 o’clock. More notably, the 9 o’clock subdial shows Buzz Aldrin climbing down onto the lunar surface. This 18K Moonshine™ Gold subdial is blackened and laser-engraved.
The blackened decorative inner caseback shows Buzz Aldrin’s laser-engraved footprint on the lunar surface, while Neil Armstrong’s legendary quote 'That's one small step for a man one giant leap for mankind' is written in 18K Moonshine™ Gold-plated lettering.
This limited edition timepiece is in overall excellent condition and accompanied by the international warranty card and a limited edition NASA-style presentation. The box provides a very cool docking station when the watch is not being worn.
