Description

Yellow Gold and Coral Diadem

1845

Set with five coral cameos each set in panels decorated with acanthus leaf motifs, mounted in 14 karat yellow gold, can be worn as a bracelet, length approximately 190mm, to a detachable gold chain, length approximately 310mm.

In the early 19th century, a bandeau of cameos were worn as an alternative to a formal tiara, at times accompanied by haircombs. This example showcases five coral cameos depicting portraits likely of classical Greek deities. As archeological jewels became fashionable, interest in cameos also rose. The inscription in the jewel states 'To my wife, on the birth of William Stovin, Thursday march 6 1845.
