Description

Art Nouveau Enamel, Pearl and Diamond Brooch

Masriera

Designed as a nymph holding an old-mine-cut and brilliant-cut diamond, in front of plique-à-jour enamel, between two irises applied with basse-taille enamel, highlighted with a pearl and old-cut diamonds, with pendant hooks, signed Masriera H.

Born as a son of a goldsmith and a painter in Barcelona, a blooming artistic city by the turn of the century, Luis Masriera inherited his grandfather's jewellery firm together with his brother and named it Masriera Hermanos (Masriera Brothers) in 1886. He then studied seventeenth-century Limoges enamel techniques under the famed enamellist Edward Lossier in the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He was greatly inspired by the works of René Lalique, which led him to melt down the entirety of his family's jewellery stock to create Art Nouveau pieces. In 1901 he debuted his Modernisme jewels, which were so successful that everything sold out within a week.

Please note that the pearl has not been tested for natural origin.
