A Black Stone Stele of Navagraha, the Planetary Deities
India, Pala Period, 11th-12th Century
10¼ by 25½ in. (26 by 65 cm)
of rectangular form carved with Ganesha at left and the nine planetary deities including Surya the sun-god, Chandra the moon-good, Mangala, Budha, Brhaspati, Shukra, Shani, Rahu, Ketu, a nimbus behind each divinity's head, the lower register carved with each deity's corresponding animal vehicle
