Tête de femme

signed Henri Matisse, dated 2/42, dedicated Pour le musée du Montparnasse and inscribed O 14 (lower left)

black crayon on paper

52.5 by 40.5cm., 20¾ by 15⅞in.

Framed: 84 by 71cm., 33 by 28in.

Executed in February 1941.

The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Georges Matisse who will issue a certificate to the buyer on request.

Executed on cream wove paper, not laid down, taped to the overmount along the upper edge and at the centre of the lower edge. The sheet is slightly time-stained, there are a few extremely minor spots of foxing and a few faint handling creases in places. There are artist's pinholes at the upper two corners and a small area of white chalk towards the centre of the upper edge, most likely a studio stain. There are tape remnants running along all four edges of the verso. This work is in overall very good condition.

This drawing, Tête de femme, was executed in October 1941 and was originally dated ‘10/41.’ However, in February 1942, Matisse decided to include the drawing in his ‘Themes and Variations’ publication, so he added ‘O 14’ (for theme O, variation 14) and changed the date to ‘2/42’. In 1951, the photographer Marc Vaux, who worked frequently for Matisse, created the Musée du Montparnasse in Paris. Matisse gave the drawing to Mr. Vaux for his museum with the dedication “Pour le musée du Montparnasse”.
