This drawing, Tête de femme, was executed in October 1941 and was originally dated ‘10/41.’ However, in February 1942, Matisse decided to include the drawing in his ‘Themes and Variations’ publication, so he added ‘O 14’ (for theme O, variation 14) and changed the date to ‘2/42’. In 1951, the photographer Marc Vaux, who worked frequently for Matisse, created the Musée du Montparnasse in Paris. Matisse gave the drawing to Mr. Vaux for his museum with the dedication “Pour le musée du Montparnasse”.
