Tour du Philosophe et Moulin de la Galette, Montmartre

signed Maurice, Utrillo, V. (lower right)

oil, gouache, watercolour, black crayon and pencil on paper laid down on canvas

37.1 by 55cm., 14⅝ by 21⅝in.

Framed: 61 by 78.5cm., 24 by 30⅞in.

Painted circa 1950.

The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by the Comité Utrillo-Valadon.

Executed on cream wove paper, laid down on canvas, the edges of which are taped. There is an artist's pinhole to each of the lower corners and the upper right corner, and three to the upper left corner. The sheet is slightly time-stained and there are some minor spots of foxing in places. There are some fine lines of craquelure to parts of the thicker pigments, and some tiny paint losses to the centre of the extreme upper edge. There is some slight discolouration to the upper left corner, probably relating to glue remnants behind. There is a faint horizontal line running through the upper third of the work, probably inherent to the artist's working process. This work is in overall good condition.
