Acquired from the above by the present owner in 2019
The present work is a study for the 1906 painting La sieste à Saint-Tropez, which marked an important juncture in the career of Henri Lebasque. Lebasque had already established his presence in the Parisian art world and was friends with the Neo-Impressionists and the Nabis alike; it was said that he had his first art lesson from Camille Pissarro. While he was known for his lyrical images of family life, from 1906 onwards, his subjects gained a new luster due to his time in the South of France.
