Tête

signed max ernst (lower right)

pencil frottage on paper

33.3 by 25.9cm., 13⅛ by 10¼in.

Framed: 54.7 by 47.7cm., 21½ by 18¾in.

Drawn in 1934.

Executed on cream wove paper (on top of a raised plate impression), not laid down, and hinged to the overmount in two places along the upper edge. The sheet is slightly time-stained and the edges are slightly uneven, especially the upper edge. There are several creases in places (most prominently to the lower right corner), most of which are only visible in a raking light, and a 1cm-long tear to the centre of the right edge. There are a few spots of minor foxing in places and some old tape remnants to the upper edge of the verso. This work is in overall good condition.
