Reference 3940 was introduced by Patek Philippe in 1985 and production officially ceased in March 2006. As the successor to the famed perpetual calendar references 3448 and 3450, it was manufactured in three series over a 20-year production period and differed substantially in design from its predecessors, as the calendar display changed from digital apertures to subsidiary dials indicating the day and month by hands.

The present watch is part of the second series which was produced between 1988 and 1998, and featured an additional sapphire crystal display back in addition to the solid one. What makes this particular watch even more attractive and collectible is the fact that it is equipped with a German calendar display, something which was done upon request by the client and is therefore rarely seen. This rare particularity is confirmed by the accompanying Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives which further indicates the production of the watch in 1991 and its subsequent sale on February 21st, 1992.
