The reference 96 is perhaps one of Patek Philippe’s most iconic pieces. An emblem of minimalism, sophistication, and timelessness, the reference was a huge success and saw for an impressive 40-year continuation within the Patek Philippe collection running from 1932 to 1973. Defining the classic Calatrava look, the stainless steel reference 96 sports a round case and elongated lugs, and notably rare for this particular reference, luminous dots and hands as well as applied steel Breguet numerals. For a watch manufactured in 1943, as stated in the watch’s original accompanying extract, the dial presents itself in exquisite condition--clean and complete. Furthermore, what is also interesting to note is the ‘Patek Philippe & Co.’ signature on the current piece--a signature only seen on watches from the time of the company’s name change in 1851 to approximately the late 1940s to early 1950s. From then on, also seen on the brand’s watches today, the signature simply reads ‘Patek Philippe’.

The present piece is a 31 mm stainless steel reference 96. The case, dial, and movement, in turn, are all signed. Most uniquely, the caseback of this piece is engraved “Frank B. Hart Affectionate Remembrance of Loyal Service to Popular Mechanics Magazine 1909 H.H. Windsor Jr. Press 1944.” H.H. Windsor Jr, son of H.H. Windsor and the founder of Popular Mechanics magazine, too, was an avid watch enthusiast. The present piece is one among few Patek Philippe pieces gifted to various members of the Popular Mechanics community.
