The Patek Philippe Advance Research Program is a representation of avante-garde watchmaking for the future as it’s goal is to ensure greater precision within mechanical watches by the application of silicon. Silicon is a metalloid which Patek Philippe refers to as Silivnar that can be used as a replacement of components for the traditional steel alloys in the movement. The advantageous of applying Silivnar in watchmaking when in comparison to the traditional steel alloys is that it is significantly harder, lighter and more corrosion resistant, furthermore it’s is exceptionally smooth therefore it does not require schedule lubricant, thus prolonging need of regular servicing.

In total there have been 5 references released by Patek Philippe from the Advanced Research Program since 2005, the reference 5250 in 2005, the reference 5350 in 2006, the reference 5450 in 2008, the reference 5550 in 2011 and finally the reference 5650 in 2017. Each released in a series of limited pieces, the present watch, the reference 5650 was the latest iteration from the collection. Made in association to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Aquanaut family, the 5650 features a Spiromax hairspring of Silivnar and furthermore features a never been seen before time zone setting mechanism shown at 9 o’clock, that reduces the subgroup from it’s conventional 37 component to 17 and while it does not require lubricant to operate.

Only a handful of these wristwatches have been offered at auction, the present watch is retailed by Tiffany & Co. and in close to new condition.
