gilt bronze

impressed LALANNE, monogrammed CL, numbered 6/8 and dated 2016

32 x 48 x 23 1/2 in. (81.2 x 121.9 x 59.6 cm)

Overall in excellent condition. This important settee by Claude Lalanne, originally held in the historic collection of the artist, is a magnificent example of her predilection for the “crocodile” motif. Executed in vivid gilt bronze, the piece includes two small life-size crocodiles wrapped around the backrest in addition to four crocodile feet supporting decorative cabbage leaves. When viewed in person, the gilt patina presents with stunning and subtle variations in gold hues that enhance the sculptural appearance of the work. The bronze surfaces have recently been sensitively cleaned and waxed by a professional restorer with strong expertise in works by Les Lalanne. The bronze surfaces present with irregularities in casting throughout that are inherent to the making and to the artist’s technique. The copper seat presents with slightly warmer hues compared to the bronze which beautifully complements the rest of the sculptural elements. The copper presents with minute oxidation spots and light surface scratches throughout consistent with age and gentle use. The settee is offered together with a later, custom-made leather cushion with a brown, imitation crocodile texture in excellent condition and consistent with the design of other cushions that often accompany the artist’s “Crocodile” pieces. This offering, highly complementary with the following lot and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, provides Lalanne collectors with the opportunity to acquire a rare version of this coveted form in beautifully preserved original condition.
