Overall in very good condition. One of François-Xavier Lalanne’s most iconic designs, the Mouton de Pierre is a majestic form executed in epoxy stone and patinated bronze. The epoxy stone body presents with occasional surface irregularities and faint color variations inherent to the material and its production. The epoxy stone presents with a few very fine hairline cracks and small losses, particularly concentrated to the front of the body as illustrated in the catalogue photography, all stable and not visually distracting. The epoxy stone above the Mouton’s face with a small crack measuring approximately ⅜ in., stable and not visually distracting. The tail with a very small loss to the epoxy stone measuring approximately ¼ in., stable and not visually distracting. The patinated bronze surfaces present with occasional very fine surface scratches particularly concentrated to the hooves as consistent with gentle use, as well as minute pinholes and minor casting irregularities which are inherent to the making and common for works by the artist. The epoxy stone and bronze surfaces have recently been professionally cleaned by a museum-level restorer with strong expertise in works by Les Lalanne, to revitalize the original appearance of the materials. The patina presents with occasional and very minor areas of discoloration, partially revealing a lustrous bronze underside, but overall exhibits a homogenous charcoal tone. Offered en suite with the following lot, this offering provides a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire two Moutons de Pierre in very good condition suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
