A large peach-shaped qiangjin and tianqi lacquer box and cover
Qing Dynasty, Kangxi period
modelled in the shape of a large peach issuing from a gnarled branch, the cover and sides decorated with an overall design of flowering and fruiting branches issuing from further gnarled branches, the heavy fruit interspersed with flying bats, all executed in the incised and filled-in technique, the inside lacquered black with gold flecks
Width 45 cm, 17¾ in.
The cover has a circa 18cm wide crescent-shaped break to the rim and handle and the handle has been re-attached, a circa 7cm., age crack to the rim and further minor age cracks and associated minor nibbles, all with associated re-freshing to the black lacquer and red lacquer at the rims, the box has over-painting to a circa 3cm deep band of the red lacquer and tips of the leaves encircling the lower exterior edge and minor age cracks to the lacquer on the interior.
