A gilt-bronze figure of Maharaja Manjushri

Ming dynasty, second half of 15th century

明十五世紀下半葉 鎏金銅文殊菩薩坐像


seated in dhyanasana atop a Buddhist lion on a lotus base, wearing flowing robes open at the chest to reveal a jewelled necklace, the face with a serene expression, the hair gathered in a high chignon and held by a five-pointed diadem 

Height 26.8 cm, 10½ in.

Acquired by Giuseppe Domenico Musso (1878-1940), an Italian lawyer and businessman active in Shanghai in the early 20th century.

In the family by descent.
