A gilt-bronze figure of Avalokiteshvara

Ming dynasty, 16th/17th century

明十六/十七世紀 鎏金銅觀音坐像


seated in dhyanasana on a lotus base, the right hand raised holding a stem of lotus and left hand holding a cup, dressed in loose robes elaborately decorated with floral borders, wearing bejewelled necklaces around the chest, the face with a serene expression 

Height 32.2 cm, 12¾ in.

Acquired by Giuseppe Domenico Musso (1878-1940), an Italian lawyer and businessman active in Shanghai in the early 20th century.

In the family by descent.
