A carved cinnabar lacquer 'dragon' box and cover
Qing dynasty, Qianlong period
the top of the domed cover deeply and finely carved with a central ferocious five-clawed dragon with its powerful scaly body writhing around a 'flaming pearl', encircled by four dragons striding in a similar pursuit, all reserved on a dense ground of crashing waves and flames, the base similarly decorated, the interiors lacquered black
Diameter 19 cm, 7½ in.
There is a 1cm., wide rim chip to the cover, refreshing and minor chips to the lacquer on and around the flaming pearl in the centre of both the cover and the box, some further re-freshing to one of the dragons heads by the rim of the cover and two small areas of scroll decoration, some nicks to the edges and raised parts of the carving on the box and cover and refreshing to the red lacquer on the rims and flange.
