The carving of this head draws on the tradition of the Yungang caves near Datong in Shanxi province, which were largely constructed between 398 and 494, when Pingcheng, modern Datong, was capital of the Northern Wei period. Another closely related sandstone head of a Bodhisattva, smaller in size, was sold in our London rooms, 13th May 2015, lot 18, from the Tsuneichi Inouye collection.
