An archaic bronze ritual food vessel, gui

Early Western Zhou dynasty, ca. 11th/10th century BC

西周早期 約公元前十一至十世紀 青銅夔龍紋簋


with a deep shaped body raised on a slightly spreading foot, the shoulders set with a pair of curved handles issuing from prominent bovine heads at the top and a hooked tab projecting from the bottom, a band of stylised linear dragons/birds centered on small animal masks on each side just below the everted rim, a similar band repeated around the the foot, the bronze with a mottled greenish-grey patina with substantial ferrous and earth encrustation

Width across handles 26.1 cm, 10 1/4 in.

Acquired by the parents of the present owner in the 1960s.
