Very Fine and Rare Chippendale Mahogany Block-Front Slant-Front Desk

attributed to Felix Huntington (1749–1823)

Norwich, Connecticut

circa 1775-1790


Appears to retain its original cast brass hardware.

Height 43 1/4 in. by Width 42 1/2 in. by Depth 22 in.

This powerful block-front desk possesses many of the characteristics identified to Felix Huntington of Norwich, Connecticut by Thomas P. Kugelman in “Felix Huntington and the Furniture of Norwich, Connecticut, 1770–1800,” American Furniture, (Milwaukee, WI: Chipstone Foundation, 2011), pp. 170-203.  Namely the desk’s backboards are oriented horizontally and nailed into rabbets; its drawer dividers are blind-dovetailed at the sides and covered with facing strips at the front; its drawer runners are set in dadoes in case sides; lastly wooden pins are used to secure the base molding.
