The tempestuous waters and apocalyptic skies foreshadow the imminent demolition of the ship,  Warren Hastings, off the West Coast of Cuba.  The “Great Havana Hurricane” of 1846 struck western Cuba with the intensity of a category 5 hurricane, wrecking over 85 merchant vessels, destroying nearly every building in Havana, and causing over 200 deaths in its wake.  The storm transformed into an extratropical cyclone as it traveled northward, wreaking havoc across the eastern United States seaboard.
