The oversized palmettes in the corners and the lappet border link this asparagus dish with an extensive service in the "George III" style, designed by Paulding Farnham for the 1900 Paris Exposition, where Tiffany won a gold medal for silver. The service was partly shown the following year in the Buffalo exhibition.
Much of the service, including the figural centerpiece (now in the Dallas Museum of Art), a pair of four-light candelabra, candlesticks, compotes, dessert dishes, and claret jugs, was sold Sotheby Parke Bernet Inc., New York, March 21, 1975, lots 107-114. A pair of sauce boats from the service were recently with Spencer-Marks, Ltd., while a pair of candelabra, four candlesticks, and three centerpieces were acquired by the Newark Museum in 2011; they had originally been purchased by Franklin Murphy, former New Jersey governor, Newark varnish magnate, and founding trustee of the Newark Museum, and several of the pieces similarly bear both the Paris and Buffalo marks.
Tiffany continued to produce the designs separately for several years; another matching centerpiece, completed in 1904, is illustrated John Loring, Tiffany's 150 Years, p. 126.
