Description

A Rare and Large Chinese Export Grisaille-deccorated 'Marraige' Plate for the Dutch Market

Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period, circa 1740

清乾隆 約1740年 墨彩描金西洋人物故事圖大盤

finely decorated in the center with a marriage scene in the center of an architectural archway inscribed SEMPER AMOR PRO TE FIRMISSIMUS ATQUE FIDELIS, flanked by two columns on each side supporting shields painted with the arms of Geelvinck and Graaftland

diameter 13 7/8 in.; 35.3 cm

The arms painted on the shields atop the columns are those of Nicholas Geelvinck, Mayer of Amsterdam, and of Johanna Jacoba Graaftland, who he married in 1729. The scene painted in the center is said to have derived from an 18th century wedding song, according to Elinor Gordon, Collecting Chinese Export Porcelain, New York, 1977, p. 66, no. 52.
