Description

Property from the Collection of Dr. and Mrs. Silvio Riccio

A Group of Six Chinese Export Famille-rose figures

Qing Dynasty, 18th and 19th Century

清十八及十九世紀 粉彩童子仕女擺件六件

comprising: two standing figures of ladies and four seated figures of boys

height of tallest 8 1/8 in.; 20.6 cm

A similarly modeled figure of a standing lady was sold at Christie's Amsterdam, May 13th, 1997, lot 138, as part of a set and described as an immortal, presumably He Xiangu. However, the attribute of He Xiangu is in fact a stem of lotus, and not a ruyi-sceptre as depicted in the present examples. This type of figure is perhaps not intended to accurately represent the eight Daoist immortals, but rather were intended as objects of curiosity exported to the West in the 19th century. Other figures of seated boys were sold at Christie's London, October 7th, 1974, lots 93 and 94. Two other examples of the same type were sold in these rooms, November 18th, 1976, lot 46.
