An example with the same central panel but different borders is illustrated in David Howard and John Ayers, China for the West, London, 1978, vol. I, cat. no. 329, where the authors suggest that the scene represents the 'Choice of Hercules' and notes that the scene is inspired by a painting by the Italian painter Annibale Carraci (1560-1609), which may be in turn, copied by artists such as Van Loo or Fragonard in the 18th century as a print.
