Description

A Tooth of a Woolly Mammoth

Mammuthus primigenius Pleistocene

Europe

Measuring 7 x 7 x 3 inches.

Mammuthus primigenius was a contemporary to Homo neanderthalensis during the Middle Paleolithic period, and of Homo sapiens during the Upper Paleolithic, until its extinction around 12,000 BCE, though it is now recognized that it may have survived in certain regions all the way until 5000 BCE. The wooly mammoth was one of the largest terrestrial mammals of all time, and was equipped with two enormously impressive tusks, one of the many things about this giant herbivore that has captured the human imagination.
