"There are four characters in the Chinese title of “The Grandmaster.” The calligraphy of these characters was a combination of the works from two master calligraphers. The first and final characters were created by the contemporary artist, Ms. Tong Yang-Tze. The second and third characters were printed from “Qinli Stele”, the magnum opus of the great calligrapher from the Tang Dynasty, Yan Zhenqing, whose “regular script” remains one of the most studied and influential calligraphic styles till this day.

Combining the works of these masters was a demonstration of the ethos behind THE GRANDMASTER - an ongoing interpretation of traditions and styles over time. To arrive at this union, we experimented with countless calligraphic styles, not only on Xuan paper, but also on wood to evoke the full forms of these styles. The chosen calligraphy was carved onto this plaque and sealed with gold leaf by craftsmen. This work has been a collection of the Jet Tone Archive ever since."
