An unusual gold-mounted hardstone corkscrew/seal, London, circa 1765,


of pale purple and banded grey agates, with barrel handle and tapering sheath concealing the screw and terminating in a seal matrix engraved 'secret' above a putto, wreathed and reeded gold mounts, unmarked, in original fishskin case, the silk lining inscribed: No. 27 £11 adc

A very similar corkscrew, interestingly also with the base and the top apparently carved from differently patterned agates, was part of the collection of Erich von Goldschmidt-Rothschild (see Paul Graupe/Hermann Ball, Die Sammlung Erich von Goldschmidt-Rothschild, Berlin, sale 23-25 March 1931, lot 289).
