A hardstone cigarette case with enamelled gold mounts, Spadaro, French

circa 1930


rectangular with rounded corners, the lid decorated with a gold abstract geometric openwork band, centred with a circular red enamel plaque with quatrefoil gold decoration in a locket frame, the trapezoid clasp set with a garnet cabochon, maker's mark,post-1919 French control mark

8cm., 3 1/8 in. wide

The maker's mark SA in a horizontal lozenge with an oar ('une rame') in between, is recorded as the mark for the French company Spadaro, 'Les Rames', 47310 Laplume (Poinçons des Bijouterie, Dictionnaire, Paris, 1973).
