Paris, 1819-1838
oval, the hinged lid later inset with an oval enamel plaque representing a flower bouquet, three putti to the left and a lake with a fountain in the far distance, signed: Feller, within acanthus border, plain raised thumbpiece, the sides chased with neo-classical scenes alternating with griffins, the base of semi-translucent agate within a leaf tip border, partially rubbed maker's mark, Paris 3me titre et grosse garantie 1819-1838,

Albert Feller is recorded as a 19th century Swiss school enamel painter (E. Bénézit, Dictionnaire critique et documentaire des peintres, sculpteurs, dessinateurs et graveurs, Librairie Gründ, 1955, vol 3, p. 705). It may seem surprising at first that a Geneva enamel plaque would have been later chosen to decorate the lid of a gold box made in the period of Bourbon Restoration, but in fact, many enamel painters from Geneva went to Paris to work there and vice versa, traditionally part of a broader vivid cultural exchange between the two cities despite political disputes and differences in the earlier years.
