Description

Property from a Distinguished Private Collection

A Charles II oak side table

circa 1690

the moulded boarded top above a single twin-panelled frieze drawer, raised on bobbin-turned legs united by conforming stretchers

71cm. high, 90cm. wide, 54cm. deep; 2ft. 4in., 2ft. 11 1/2in., 1ft. 9 1/2in.

For a similar 'joined' side table see that illustrated, Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge, 1979, p. 270. The table illustrated by Chinnery features the same bobbin turning and raised stretcher bars.

The use of an 'H-form' stretcher suggests that the present table was conceived as a writing or dressing table.
