Description

Property from the Curwen collections at Workington Hall, Ewanrigg Hall and Belle Isle, Cumbria

A George III mahogany chest of drawers

circa 1788, attributed to Gillows

the moulded top above two short and three long graduated drawers, on bracket feet

98cm. high, 115cm. wide, 58cm. deep; 3ft. 2½in., 3ft. 9¼in., 1ft. 11¼in.

Probably John Christian Curwen (1756–1828) for Workington Hall, Cumbria;
Thence by descent.
Gillows supplied a number of mahogany 'lobby' chests of drawers to Workington Hall as part of their extensive commission in 1788, and while the present lot cannot be identified definitively, it is possibly the 'large mahogany lobby chest of drawers 3ft 11 by 3ft 3 high with a suit [of] good brass locks & framed backs [***] french feet'.
