The Dead’s first scheduled performance at Madison Square Garden was ultimately canceled, as Jerry Garcia was sick with the flu. Six days prior, they performed at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey, while Garcia was extremely ill; the next day they were slated to play at the New Haven Coliseum, but he was no longer able to perform. That night, the audience was already seated, and Jim Koplik, the Dead’s promotor, was terrified that they would “turn on him” if he announced the cancellation. But, “as he started up the stage steps […] he found Mickey and Bobby flanking him as he approached the mike. Bobby made the announcement, and in fact, there was only one response. Someone in the audience threw a rose onstage, and then the audience went peacefully home” (McNally 525). The band cancelled the remainder of their shows until Garcia recovered, and their Madison Square Garden debut was rescheduled to 6 January 1979.
