The Dead played 43 concerts at the Fillmore East from June 1968 through April 1971. The venue, nicknamed The Church of Rock and Roll, was an east coast companion to Bill Graham’s Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. Quickly after its opening it became a leading rock venue, “and no band would play there more often or more successfully than the Dead" (Mcnally 264).
