Description
Gaetano Gandolfi
San Matteo della Decima near Bologna 1734 - 1802 Bologna
Thetis entrusting the infant Achilles to the centaur Chiron
Pen and brown ink and brown and gray washes over traces of black chalk;
bears old attribution in pencil on the mount: Disegno del Gandolfi
215 by 298 mm; 8 1/2 by 11 3/4 in
A lively and animated composition, this drawing was probably preparatory for one of Gaetano's mythological paintings, although no direct comparison can be made with any of his surviving works. Notable works in oil are Gaetano's Diana and Callisto and Birth of Venus, both in private collections.1
