Though better known as one of the leading engravers active in Bologna in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the present work is a fine example of Mattioli's work as a draughtsman.
Comparable sheets by the artist, in which the same meticulous handling is so clearly evident, can be found in the Uffizi, Florence, the Royal Collection, Windsor and the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart.1
