Since the mid-eighteen century, the name Leroy has been associated with the finest French timepieces.
Very little is still known on the rare wristwatches that they produced in the 1930's and 40's. Only one other piece from the same period seems to have appeared in an international auction in the last 15 years.
This example has a large 36 mm gold case with a hinged back and cuvette. The case number is present inside the caseback that is repeated on the back of the cuvette, while the front bears the famous Parisian signature and a second number. It protects a nicely finished gilt movement.
The dial is beautifully made with large Breguet numerals and a engine-turned centerfold with the L. Leroy & Cie signature highlighted in a cartouche. The Breguet or "pomme creuse" hands add the final touch of elegance to it.
This piece is a testimony of the transition between the pocket to the wrist watch made at that time.
Such a rare, aesthetically pleasant and nicely made watch will surely find a center place in a connoisseur's collection.
