Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India in 1876 and since than Indian jewellery become popular through out Europe. Following Paris Exposition Universelle and Cartier creation of the first ‘Indian’ style jewel, Indian jewels fascinated Queen Alexandra that summoned Cartier to create an Indian necklace to be worn as Empress Consort of India, during the celebrations of George V’s coronation at the Delhi Durbar in 1911. That was the beginning of a fortunate adventure for Jacques Cartier that the same year embarked for his first journey to India that brought him to visit the enchanted world of Maharajas. The following decades, Cartier had the privilege to bring European style and platinum innovation into the most important Indian collections such as the ones from the Maharaja of Baroda; Redesigning these amazing collections took many years but the result was a transformation of traditional Indian decorative vocabulary into modern jewels that still today can be admired in engraved colored stones and diamond creations, the ‘Tutti Frutti’.
