Mercurius, god of Roman mythology, son of Jupiter, was considered the protector of travelers. Endowed with incredible speed he was the messenger of the gods, depicted with wings on his feet or winged sandals and a typical traveler's headdress sometimes winged as symbol of intelligence, which stood above matter in order to dominate it through knowledge.
