Yashima Gakutei (1786?–1868)
A complete set of six surimono of the series Warriors as the Six Famous Poets (Buke Rokkasen)
Edo period, 19th century
each a woodblock print, surimono, embellished with metallic pigments and embossing, from the series Warriors as the Six Famous Poets (Buke Rokkasen) each signed Gakutei or Gakutei hitsu, privately issued circa 1827, and comprising:
- Ota Dokan
- Gensan mi Yorimasa
- Minamoto no Yorimitsu
- Minamoto no Yoshiie
- Kamakura Udaijin (Minamoto no Sanetomo)
- Taira no Tadanori
Each surimono, shikishiban: each approx. 20.7 x 18.6, 8⅛ x 7¼ in.
Each surimono of this set features a famous warrior from the tenth to the fifteenth centuries, accompanied by a kyoka poem and all set against thick gold backgrounds.
