An amorous couple in the room of a tea-house (cha-ya)

Edo period, 18th century


woodblock print, depicting a geisha and her client embracing on the tatami floor of a room in a tea-house (cha-ya) beside a shamisen, sake kettle (choshi) and a lacquer tray containing the remains of food with a chopstick placed on the rim and the other fallen askew, a vase of flowers on the alcove, published circa 1769-70, collector's seals of Hayashi Tadamasa and Henri Vever 


Horizontal chuban: 20.2 x 26.2 cm., 8 x 10⅜ in.
