Yahagi Bridge at Okazaki on the Tokaido (Tokaido Okazaki Yahagi no hashi)

Edo period, 19th century


woodblock print, from the series Remarkable Views of Bridges in Various Provinces (Shokoku meikyo kiran), signed saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu, censor's seal kiwame, published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), circa 1834


Horizontal oban: 24.8 x 37 cm., 9¾ x 14½ in.

Measuring 1,248 feet, the Yahagi Bridge was the longest bridge constructed along the route of the Tokaido. A crowd of pedestrians, porters and men on horseback are shown crossing the dramatic arch of the bridge. Cloth and umbrellas have been put out to dry on the riverbed below; a little way off a group of samurai use the temporary space as an archery range.
