註:藻井者,「交木為井,飾以藻文」,乃古代建築最頂部之天花裝飾,穹然如傘,多見於宮殿、寺廟。東漢〈風俗通〉記「今殿作天井,井者,東井之像也。菱、水中之物。皆所以厭火也」,蓋五行中藻主水,井中有水,水火相剋,置木建築中,取平安避火之祥瑞。敦煌佛窟中之藻井,簡化了傳統層層叠木結構,彩繪方形圖案於窟中內頂,兼具穹蒼天際之意。由於長期高踞窟頂,少受風沙日曬或人為因素侵害,自北朝以至元代繪製之四百餘頂藻井,紋樣、色彩大多保存完好,為窺探不同時代之風格特徵提供極難得之原始素材。

一九四一年初,張大千率子姪門人等遠赴敦煌,埋首三載,傾盡心力財力,鑽研石窟藝術,摹寫壁間彩繢,佛道人物及故事外,純圖案畫之藻井自不錯過。本幅寫於粗絹,攷構圖可知乃敦煌研究院編號三二三窟主室藻井,該窟以「張騫出使西域」佛教史蹟畫聞名。藻井藝術在盛唐時期發展至高峰,井心面積縮小,井外邊飾、外圍垂幔層次增多,團花繁密。井心「青綠紅赭套色四瓣蓮花」,方井朱色為地,乃盛唐時期特色,四角角花對稱,方桁部份繪小寶相花、藤蔓分枝回卷忍冬紋,外圍飾魚鱗紋及垂角紋,紋樣豐富,描繪精緻,層層相套,色彩搭配艷麗多姿,極富裝飾性,充份展現在盛唐時期文治武功鼎盛之時代氣息下,「至精至美」、富麗華貴之風采。

若與現藏博物館之大千藻井臨本相對照,畫面尺寸皆約兩平方尺,題款則置於畫外;畫面左上方鈐頓立夫刻「老棄敦煌」印,左下見陳巨來刻「大千父」,規格同出一轍。

大千先生此行作畫逾二百,珍若拱璧,四十年代成都、上海等地屢經展覽,深獲讚譽,仍只展不賣。四九年他親攜部分離國,遺下者在一九五三年由家人捐贈四川省博物館;一九七六年畫家自美遷臺,六十一幀即捐予臺北故宮博物院,可見畫家著眼處,乃精研中國文化藝術遺產之心血積累,與眾同享之無私,難怪散落私人收藏者,屈指可數!本幅乃畫家自存,付夫人徐雯波珍藏,二○○○年十月香港蘇富比中國書畫部受徐雯波女士囑咐舉行拍賣專場時方面世。
