[French Revolution]
No. 1. Liste Générale et très-exacte des noms, âges, qualités et demeures de tous les Conspirateurs qui ont été condamnés à mort par le Tribunal Révolutionnaire. Paris: Chez Marchand, Berthé, Channaud, [1794]
8vo (222 x 137 mm, uncut). Some light browning, some edgewear. Stab-sewn, original wrapper; wrappers with a few stains. Half red morocco folding-case.
A gruesome record of the use of the guillotine during the French Revolution, in as-issued condition. The list contains the names of 289 victims, including their names, occupations, offenses, sentence, and date and place of execution. Appearing on the list are Louis XVI (no. 23), Marie-Antoinette (no. 105), the Duc D'Orleans (no. 150), and the Comtesse du Barry (no. 211).
Eleven further such lists were published, but the first, which includes the King and Queen, is of greatest interest.
