Art de L'imprimerie a Venise. Venice: Ferd. Ongania; New York: Amedeo Ongania, 1895-1897
4to (298 x 209 mm). Illustrated throughout with examples of printing devices and lettering; some minor soiling and toning. Rebound in highly ornamental wood paneling, 21 shaped compartments cut away from each cover to reveal decorated mother-of-pearl onlay reminiscent of Venetian window arches; rebacked, some restoration to paneling, minor rubbing. Housed in custom clamshell case.
A sumptuous volume bound by Ferdinando Ongania, one of Venice's most important booksellers
Publisher and bookseller, Ferdinando Ongania is perhaps best remembered for publishing the monumental Basilica San Marco. He is also known for incorporating the latest photographic techniques into his publications in order to create facsimile editions and reproductions of great Venetian artworks. Ongania published out of his antique shop and gallery on Piazza San Marco, which, over time, garnered an international clientele.
