Floris Verster’s floral arrangements are characterized by fierce colours and rapid brush strokes as evidenced by the present work. Verster had a penchant for the quiet and still things in life – a love that lead him to paint flowers. His studio, as described by Christiaan Vogelaar was decorated with mirrors and glass vases to catch the sparkling effects of light, this being an essential aspect of his art.

Verster was born in Leiden and grew up in an artistic family. His father was a well-known scholar and painter of birds who worked at the National Museum of History in Leiden and his brother became an art critic and curator of the Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal. Verster studied at the Royal Academy of art in The Hague between 1880 and 1884 and received drawing lessons from Gerardus Johannes Bos and George Hendrik Breitner.
