The present work was in the collection of John Reid by 1913. He was a collector based in Glasgow who had an interest in British and French paintings and particularly Dutch artists such as Jozef Israels, Willem Maris, Bernard Blommers, Hendrik Willem Mesdag, Anton Mauve and Louis Apol. John Forbes White was reputed to have brought the first Corot into Scotland, and collectors in the North recognized early the merits of the Barbizon School, Dutch Romantic painters and the Impressionists.
