John Munday, E.W. Cooke 1811-1880 - A Man of his Time, 1996, p. 319, no. 58/13
The present view depicts the same beach as Fishing Cove of Beer painted looking in the same direction but from further up the beach, and Distant View of Beer Head and White Cliff at Low Water which looks in a westerly direction, both painted in 1858. The present picture dates from the same year and is of the same size as these two paintings. As The Illustrated London News in 1864 pointed out; 'The prime characteristic of Mr Cooke's art is literal fidelity to nature. He is probably the most scientifically accurate painter we possess. His pictures not merely gratify the lovers of realism in art by the exact reproduction of the outward aspects of the natural world, but also satisfy the geologist, botanist, meteorologist, architect and shipbuilder...'
