In the first half of the nineteenth century Van der Stok as well as other Dutch artists such as Andreas Schelfhout focused on winter landscapes. The present work shows a frozen waterway with a low horizon, typically seen in Dutch landscapes. The Koek-en-zopie in the centre, was commonly found on the ice from about the 17th century, selling food (easily eaten by hand) and drink. The treatment of ice is superb; the scratches, tears and reflections have been depicted with great natural quality.
