Composition with Shell

signed in Cyrillic and dated 72 t.r.

oil on canvas

Canvas: 60 by 66cm, 23½ by 26in.

Framed: 77 by 83cm, 30¼ by 29¾in.

Original canvas which is attached to a relatively new wooden stretcher. The canvas is buckling slightly, most notably in the corners. There are cracks to the paint surface, most noticeably to the white rectangle in the foreground, along the left and top edges as well as to the centre of the right edge. There is a light layer of surface dirt. Inspection under UV light reveals no obvious signs of retouching. Framed.

Composition with Shell is an example of Weisberg’s so-called ‘white on white’ style, the purist aesthetic of form and shade which the artist developed in the 1960s. Weisberg sought to express the harmony of the world through his painting. 'If we had perfect eyesight, we would not be able to tell objects apart. We would see nothing but pure harmony' (the artist quoted in K.Muratova, 'Vladimir Veisberg. Dvadtsat’ vyskazyvanii', Nashe nasledie, No.55, 2000).
